Author: Daniel G. Teleoaca – Maritime Chief Engineer The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set an ambitious course to decarbonize the global shipping industry, aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. This revised strategy, adopted in July 2023, marks a significant step forward for the maritime sector, which is responsible for nearly 3%…
Author: Daniel G. Teleoaca – Marine Chief Engineer Introduction Thermal oil boilers, a specialized type of boiler designed to heat thermal oil, have become increasingly popular in marine applications due to their versatility and efficiency. These boilers provide a reliable and safe source of heat for various onboard systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning…
Author: Daniel G. Teleoaca – Marine Chief Engineer Introduction The Riken SD-1 gas detector is a critical component in ensuring safety in hazardous environments. Regular and proper testing is essential to guarantee its reliability and accuracy. This article provides a comprehensive guide to testing Riken SD-1 gas detectors, including procedures, precautions, and troubleshooting. Understanding the…
Author: Daniel G. Teleoaca – Marine Chief Engineer The world’s oceans are vital for global trade and transportation. But with great maritime activity comes a responsibility to minimize environmental impact. One key technology helping achieve this is Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) for vessel engines. Let’s dive deep into the world of vessel engine EGR systems….
Author: Daniel G. Teleoaca – Marine Chief Engineer Imagine a giant, powerful engine churning beneath the waves, propelling a massive ship. While all seems smooth from the outside, within the engine lurks a hidden enemy: torsional vibration. What are the torsional vibrations and who cause them on a marine engine? The culprit behind torsional vibrations…
The two-stroke engine, a collosum that propels the vessel through the vast ocean, is an engineering marvel and has a rich history. But even the most powerful engine relies on different components that sometimes act as a silent partner, and one of these crucial components that often goes unnoticed is the scavenge air receiver. Without…
Author: Daniel G. Teleoaca – Marine Chief Engineer The main engine of a ship is the main propulsion element, propelling the vessel across vast stretches of water. But just like any powerful engine, it generates a lot of heat. That’s where auxiliary blowers come in, playing a critical role in keeping the engine running smoothly…
Author: Daniel G. Teleoaca – Marine Chief Engineer The beating heart of a ship is its main engine, and just like any hardworking engine, it needs a reliable air cooling system to function efficiently. This is where the ship’s main engine air coolers, come into play. Understanding the Why: Hot Air, Less Power There are…
